Attic

A homeowner's guide to attic ventilation

Your roof works harder than you think.

nice_house

Heat radiates through the roof deck into the attic.

Without airflow, attic temperatures climb past 150Β°F β€” baking shingles from underneath and pushing cooling costs up.

Roofs

Trapped moisture condenses on a cold roof deck.

Warm household air rises and condenses against the underside of the roof β€” a slow path to rot, mould, and ice damming.

Frequently asked questions

Answers before you're on the roof.

The questions homeowners and contractors ask us most often.

Why does my roof need solar powered vents?

Unventilated attics run hot in summer and trap moisture in winter β€” both age a roof faster than it should. A solar powered vent moves air all day, every day, without relying on wind or a temperature gradient the way passive vents do.

What does it actually fix in summer?

Attic heat can climb well past 130Β°F (55Β°C) on an unventilated roof, baking shingles from underneath and pushing warm air into the living space below. Moving that heat out protects the shingles and takes load off the A/C.

What does it fix in winter?

Warm household air rising into a cold attic condenses β€” left unchecked, that moisture rots roof decking, feeds mould and, in freeze/thaw cycles, contributes to ice damming. Keeping the attic ventilated keeps it dry.

Do the vents make any noise?

No β€” they're silent from ground level. Up close, all you'd hear is air moving through the housing.

Are they animal- and hail-resistant?

Yes to both. The housing is an ABS/polycarbonate blend that's very difficult to chew or tear through, and the solar panel is tempered-glass covered.

Is there a battery, and does it work at night?

No battery β€” the panel drives the fan directly (a direct-current system) while there's usable light. At night the vent sits passive; there's no on/off switch to operate.

Does it still work on cloudy days?

Yes β€” the panel runs on UV, not direct sun, so it keeps working (just not at full speed) on overcast days.

Do I need an electrician to install one?

No. The unit has no house wiring to tie into, so any roofing contractor can install it. Prefer someone who already knows the product? Use the installer finder above.

How long is the warranty, and can I replace individual parts?

10-year limited warranty against product defects β€” register online after install to activate coverage. If a component fails, the recommended fix is replacing the unit rather than individual parts.

Where are these made, and how long has 4Seasons been around?

Assembled at our own facility in Ontario, Canada, since 2010.
